LifeStories Alive believes the essence of who you are as an individual (family or organization) is best discovered through your stories. We celebrate who you are by recording your stories in caring, meaningful ways which allow you to share your essence with others.
These personal life histories involve face-to-face interviews interlaced with family photos and mementos of the past. This is the best way to capture the essence of an individual’s life: by preserving it for posterity. These LifeStories serve as a culminating piece of one’s life experiences, and is an opportunity to impart decades worth of wisdom relating to humor, relationships, family, hard work, perseverance, and so many other aspects of a life’s journey.
Without LifeStories we sift through facts and events recorded online or in history books.
Mike O’Krent, the founder of LifeStories Alive, LLC, specializes in the making personal history videos for families.
Born and raised in San Antonio, TX, Mike received his degree in Marketing and Management from Southern Methodist University.
In a life-changing experience, from 1996 through 2000, Mike interviewed Holocaust survivors for Steven Spielberg’s Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, now the USC Shoah Foundation. It was through that experience he discovered the significance and technique of recording the life stories of loved ones. That formed the basis for his LifeStories business.
Since founding the business in 2006, LifeStories Alive has filmed legacy videos for hundreds of client families and non-profit organizations.
Mike currently serves as a Trustee for Austin’s ZACH Theatre. He has served as the Chairman of the Yom HaShoah (Day of Holocaust Remembrance) Committee for the Jewish Community Association of Austin from 2009 to the present.
“LifeStories showcase the rich abundance of one’s life experiences, and captures the mannerisms, traits, and characteristics that are unique to them.”
The LifeStories Process
Your LifeStory is all about you. That’s why we keep it simple and focused on you.
Once we are ready to start compiling your LifeStory, we ask for any photographs you would like to talk about. You can share with us printed or digital copies—10 or 100 photos—we’ll take them all, and incorporate the ones that fit well within your LifeStory.
At least a week before we show up with the cameras, we’ll meet up with you to fill out a Pre-Interview Questionnaire. During the approximately 3-hour conversation, we’ll talk about your life, and get some facts that surround stories you’ve experienced. Once we have the photos and notes from the Pre-Interview Questionnaire, we do extensive research to formulate the best questions to ask you during the interview… questions that highlight you and your LifeStory.
On the day of the interview, an interviewer and a professional videographer arrive at a place of your choosing (we come to you), set up the lights and camera, then spend the day with you as we have a conversation—taking a journey through your life.
After the interview, the videotaped conversation is delivered to a LifeStories Alive approved professional editor, where they masterfully combine the conversation with the photos and music (when appropriate) in a way that creates a living history on a digital format for the benefit of children, grandchildren, and generations to come.
